By the year 2010, this number is expected to increase to over 45 million people. Here is some helpful information to help you find a good quality nursing home for you or your loved ones.1. Talk with residents who belong to a nursing home you are considering. Bring a relative or friend with you. 2. Ask what the fees will be for a short term rate and long term. 3. Ask if there are any extras that have to be dealt with at any given notice. 4. Find out what are the billing terms and when they must be paid. 5. Check any deposits that have to be paid before entering. No deposits are required for Medicare or Medicaid recipients. 6. If a facility illegally demands a deposit, file a complaint with local and state licensing agencies. Call 1-800-368-5779 for filing a complaint. 7. Find out and check to see what your insurance policy covers. 8. Ask if the nursing home is covered in case of any financial difficulties. Find out if it is bonded and insured? Get proof in writing. A legitimate home will gladly cooperate. 9. Find out how many full time doctors, nurses, and staff are on hand on a daily basis. Too much part time help and not enough full time is a very common complaint. 10. Ask about the social activities. Are residents taken on outings? How can they attend religious services? What arrangements are made if they want to vote? 11. There are many questions to ask, that is why it is good to bring a relative or a good friend to help you make a decision. |
