How to Choose a Funeral Home

The Funeral Rule (enacted in 1984 and revised in 1994) was written in response to the tremendous abuse occurring in the funeral home industry. People are in a very vulnerable state during this time in their lives, and some unscrupulous funeral home directors will use this to their advantage.

1. It is totally appropriate and highly advisable to ask friends and associates for recommendations.

2. Once you feel comfortable with a certain funeral home, you must be given a itemization of services offered and what they cost, in writing. You're entitled to a price list for caskets.

3. You might be able to get this information over the phone and the director will in most cases help you. If not, go elsewhere.

4. You may request and receive just selected services if you don't want to purchase an inclusive package. Get an itemized bill.

5. If you feel you have been cheated but you are too distraught to pursue the matter, ask a friend or clergy person to act for you. File a complaint with the Attorney General's Office of Consumer Protection and file a complaint with the regional office of the Federal Trade Commission. Arbitration may also be available through the Funeral Services Assistance Program, 1-800-662-7666.

6. Visit the Funeral and Memorial Societies of America (FAMSA) for more help and information.
