There are few chores a homeowner dreads more than wallpapering. One of the biggest headaches involved with this job is removing the old wallpaper. The main secret is to get the glue behind the wallpaper to dissolve. Here are some wallpaper removing tricks:

1. Remember, it is best to strip off old wallpaper before applying new wallpaper, otherwise the seams and pattern of the old wallpaper could show.

2. Scrape off as much of the old wallpaper as you can. A knife or a wallpaper scraper, applied to a corner will do the trick.

3. If the paper has been painted, you'll need to cut or sand through the painted paper to create an opening.

4. If the wallpaper doesn't come off cleanly, you'll have to try a wet method of stripping.

5. The simplest wet method is to sponge the wallpaper with hot water.

6. When the wallpaper has become thoroughly soaked, take a wallpaper scraper and run it across the wall in a horizontal motion. The scraper will make holes in the paper, causing the water to seep behind it and dissolve the glue.

7. If plain hot water is not working, go to your local home improvement store and buy a product called DIF, made by a company called Zinsser. The bottle will say "wallpaper stripper, liquid concentrate." This product is great and is about the only one of its kind that really works.

8. If the wallpaper still won't come up, you'll have to resort to using a wallpaper steamer.

9. Hold the steamer against the wall, allowing the steam to penetrate and soften the paste behind the wallpaper.

10. With a knife or scraper, remove the remaining wallpaper.
